What is Sexual Assault and Abuse?
Sexual assault is defined as any unwanted sexual advances, touching, grabbing, speech or behaviors that cause the victim to feel violated or uncomfortable.
Sexual assault includes sexual activity that is against another person's will including: rape, attempted rape, sodomy, aggravated sodomy, child molestation, fondling, sexual harassment, indecent exposure, stalking, peeping toms, and sexual battery.
Rape is an act of violence in which sex is used as a weapon. Rape occurs when a person (stranger, acquaintance, or spouse/partner) engages in sexual intercourse by forcible compulsion or with someone who is incapable of consent.
Date rape is a crime in which this violent act is committed against a person by a companion, friend, or date. The so-named "date rape drugs" and alcohol may play an important role in the majority of date rape cases. Date rape is most common in our youth population.
Sexual harassment is a form of illegal sex discrimination. It refers to a wide range of inappropriate and unwanted conduct of a sexual nature which has a negative effect on the educational or employment benefits, climate or opportunities of all students or employees of educational institutions or businesses.
